FREEDOM & DIGNITY

Promoting Freedom, Equality and Human Dignity

A Project of International Human Rights Organization World Society (IHRO World Society)

“Freedom is meaningful when every person can live, speak, participate and belong with dignity.”

About the Project

The Freedom & Dignity Project is an initiative of the International Human Rights Organization World Society (IHRO World Society) dedicated to promoting fundamental freedoms, human dignity, equality and social inclusion.

The Project works to create greater awareness and understanding of the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and protection from discrimination, while encouraging dialogue, respect, tolerance and responsible civic participation.

Freedom of expression enables people to seek, receive and share ideas and information. Peaceful assembly enables individuals to come together collectively and participate in shaping their communities and societies. These freedoms are closely connected with pluralism, participation, human rights and the rule of law.

Our Vision

A world where every person can express their views peacefully, participate in public and community life, assemble without violence, and live free from discrimination, intimidation and exclusion.

Our Mission

Through education, awareness, community engagement, advocacy, research and partnerships, IHRO World Society seeks to:

  • promote understanding of freedom of expression;
  • encourage peaceful and responsible assembly;
  • strengthen respect for diversity and human dignity;
  • raise awareness about discrimination and exclusion;
  • support inclusive participation;
  • promote dialogue and peaceful resolution of differences;
  • encourage respect for human-rights defenders and civil society;
  • support vulnerable and marginalized communities; and
  • strengthen cooperation among civil society, communities and other stakeholders.

Freedom of Expression

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. It includes the ability to hold opinions and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through different forms of communication.

The Freedom & Dignity Project promotes an environment where people can express their views peacefully and responsibly, including views that may be unpopular or controversial, while recognizing that freedom of expression operates within the framework of applicable human-rights law.

Our work promotes:

  • freedom of opinion;
  • access to information;
  • responsible communication;
  • media and digital awareness;
  • respect for diverse perspectives;
  • protection of journalists and human-rights defenders;
  • constructive public dialogue; and
  • awareness of lawful limitations on expression.

Peaceful Assembly

People should have opportunities to come together peacefully to express concerns, share ideas, support causes, participate in community life and engage in public dialogue.

The UN Human Rights Committee describes peaceful assembly as a fundamental right that enables individuals to express themselves collectively and participate in shaping their societies. It also emphasizes that restrictions must satisfy requirements including legality, necessity and proportionality.

IHRO World Society promotes:

  • peaceful gatherings;
  • non-violent demonstrations;
  • community meetings;
  • public awareness activities;
  • cultural and educational gatherings;
  • peaceful civic participation; and
  • dialogue between communities and stakeholders.

The Project does not support violence, intimidation, destruction of property or threats against individuals or communities.

Protection from Discrimination

Every person deserves dignity, equality and respect.

The Freedom & Dignity Project works to raise awareness about discrimination and exclusion and to encourage equal treatment and meaningful participation.

Our activities may address discrimination related to circumstances protected by applicable human-rights law, including race, colour, sex, language, religion, national or social origin, disability and other protected characteristics.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals specifically call for promoting and enforcing non-discriminatory laws and policies under SDG Target 16.b.

Human Dignity at the Centre

Freedom and dignity are interconnected.

A society in which people can express themselves, participate peacefully and live without discrimination creates greater opportunities for:

Respect • Equality • Participation • Inclusion • Dialogue • Peace

IHRO World Society seeks to place human dignity at the centre of its programs and interactions.

  • respect for different viewpoints;
  • non-violence;
  • non-discrimination;

The Freedom & Dignity Project contributes particularly to the objectives associated with SDG 16 — Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, including public access to information, protection of fundamental freedoms and non-discriminatory laws and policies.

It also supports SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals by encouraging cooperation among civil society, communities, institutions and other stakeholders.
